Ethnic minorities in Russia

I've found the old census data from 1926 and decided to give them a new life by comparing to the newest census.

I haven't included all ethnic minorities in Russia as there're some mistakes in the old censuses, I've checked all censuses between 1926 and 2010, some ethnic groups're in a few first censuses then they just disappeared and appeared again. Of course it made me crazy but life is like this. As a result of this predictable problem with the old censuses, I decide to use in my visualization only the biggest ethnic groups.

How to create polygon map based on image in Tableau

1. Training & Tutorials on Tableau's website

Select 'On Demand', you have to create an account but it's free and you don't need to be a Tableau customer. The tutorials are selected into few groups Intro, Advanced, Chart Types, Server. It's the best place to start learning.

Check 'Live Online' out too.

Tableau's Knowledge Base – hundreds of tutorials are divided by topic.

Each short tutorial gives answer to a problem, it's good to check the titles and do tutorials which can be useful in your work. The list look like a never ending story but no reason to be in stress as most of things you will learn doing 'On Demand' tutorials.

Terrorist attacks in Russia since 1991

The researchers at the University of Maryland have created the world's largest database of terrorists attacks.
Between 1991 and 2012, there were 1,895 attacks in Russia.

In my dataviz I used data published by the Guardian.
I would like to add the data for 2013, hope to get them somewhere...

Map of the Netherlands by gemeenten

I have done this map of the Netherlands by municipalities (second level of administrative districts) for http://tableaumapping.bi
Tableau Mapping is a project, where volunteers share their maps produced from shape files, so all Tableau users can use them.

Migration between prefectures of Japan in 2012

You can check flows of the three streams:

1. In-migration: the Japanese moving into one prefecture from another place within the country.
2. Out-migration: the Japanese moving out of one prefecture to another place within the country.
3. Net internal migration: the difference between in-migration and out-migration.

How to create choropleth maps in Tableau from shape file

Tableau gives the possibility to easily create polygon maps at country and province levels. But what if you want more? Suppose you want to create a map of a city by boroughs or country by counties? There are easy solutions available [that why I am writing this post :) ]

The most cycle friendly European countries

The Netherlands and Denmark have been named the most cycle friendly countries in Europe by the European Cyclist Federation (ECF).

Countries were judge on five criteria:

1. market (bicycle sales per 1000 inhabitants)
2. modal share (cycling as main mode of transport % of population)
3. activists (ECF individual members per million inhabitants)
4. safety (number of death per 100,000 cyclists)
5. tourism (total trips per head)

Points were awarded based on a country's ranking in each category and added to give the overall scores.

Crime in London

This post was created thanks to London's Metropolitan Police, that published crime data for London's boroughs. Their data base consists even such details like number of stolen bicycles.

Crime rates (Rates per thousand population) were calculated according to: (crime / the resident population)*1000. Many boroughs have very high daytime population, so the resident population is only a fraction of the daytime population and that makes the crime rate so high in some boroughs.

Hope to see such data for other cities.

Preliminary result of the elections to the 18th German Bundestag

In German's voting system every voter gets two votes. The first allows voters to select candidate in their district. The second is for the party they support.

Zara comparator

Zara sells its products online in 23 European countries, Japan, China, the United States and Canada. Today online shop has been opened in Russia. I have compared prices of few items.

Immigration map of Berlin's neighbourhoods

The data were published by Statistical Office for Berlin-Brandenburg. There are many detailed data sets about Berlin's neighbourhoods on the website (in German :))

New York City Population by Boroughs

New York is the most populous city in the United States, more than twice the size of the second largest city, Los Angeles.

In the period from 2000 to 2010 all five of New York's boroughs saw growth:

• Staten Island 5.6%
• The Bronx 3.9%
• Manhattan 3.2%
• Brooklyn 1.6%
• Queens 0.1%

Differences in price levels for food, beverages and tobacco across Europe

Eurostat published Comparative price levels for food, beverages and tobacco.

Denmark had the highest price level for food in the EU27 in 2012, at 139% of the EU27 average, followed by Sweden (124%). The lowest price levels were observed in Poland (60%) and Romania.

Mysterious Lake Baikal

The Lake Baikal is not so mysterious anymore, one riddle has been solved, how infrastructure for eco-tourism was created.

The Great Baikal Trail was created to develop system of environmental trails around Lake Baikal. The projects are based on work done by volunteers from all over the world; Russia, Australia, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, the Netherlands, United States, Canada, Mongolia, and many more places.

To show the amount of work done in different areas of the lake I used:

• number of volunteers involved,
• man-days (=number of volunteers*number of projects' days).

I encourage you to interact with my visualization and take part in the Baikal's projects.

This data visualization is truly international:
- The data are from The Great Baikal Trail, a Russian interregional community organization.
- I am taking part in Tableau Software contest, which is open to residents of few countries so I am representing Germany :)
- The viz was done with use of American software and Russian Yandex maps :)

Suicide in Turkey

The latest statistics recorded in 2011 show that 1,876 males and 801 females committed suicide in Turkey.

The suicide rate for every 100,000 citizens is 3.58.

Half of females who commit suicide in the country are under the age of 30, half of males are under 40.

The LNG Industry 2012

International Group of LNG Importers has published report The LNG Industry 2012.

On the supply side, 5 countries out of a total of 18 made up 67% of global LNG export.

On the demand side, Japan and South Korea's combined share was around 53% of global import. Japan was buying from all exporting countries and recorded an 11% growth year on year.
Asia accounted for 71% of global LNG demand.

The share of spot and short-term trades remains stable, around 25% of total LNG trade.
